Congressman Pascrell, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Members of the Congress and invited guests, thank you very much for giving us this opportunity to present the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre. The Centre will be built in the heart of the city in front of the Cape Town International Convention Centre on land donated by the City of Cape Town.

The Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, the Foundation for Human Rights and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation co-hosted a three-day conference entitled “A National Priority? TRC Recommendations and the Need for Redress” at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront on from 28 to 30 October 2008.

“We are here to ask for hope, hope for children like me, hope for our parents, hope for our future…” These are the “heart tugging” words of an 11 year old Rwandan refugee boy, read at the Peace Center’s first public event to commemorate World Refugee Day held on Friday 20 June 2008 on the future Desmond Tutu Peace Center site.
